The history behind the brand
Since its establishment in 1893, Joseph Lyddy has been a trailblazer in the world of horse and saddle care.
Since 1893
In an era when Australia was a collection of independent colonies and owning a horse was a cherished aspiration, Joseph Lyddy recognized the need for after-sales care of saddles through the manufacturing of saddle soap and harness dressings—a venture few saddlers dared to explore. His commitment to delivering exceptional service became the cornerstone of his enduring success.
From a humble Victorian shop near Melbourne’s Victoria Market, Joseph Lyddy expanded his business and relocated to a new bluestone building on Lygon Street in Carlton, becoming a renowned name in the industry. The fame of Joseph Lyddy’s products spread, especially among the prestigious Australian Light Horse Brigade, who relied on his saddle care solutions to maintain the impeccable appearance of their gear. As demand grew in the 1920s, a new factory was erected under the architectural guidance of Walter Burley Griffin, known for his design of the city of Canberra. This factory, located on Fitzroy Street in Fitzroy, still stands today as a testament to Griffin’s ingenuity. With the advent of automobiles and the transformation of the horse industry, Waproo Pty Ltd acquired Joseph Lyddy, adapting operations to meet the evolving needs of the business. In 1993, Joseph Lyddy celebrated its centennial anniversary, marking a century of dedication to the manufacturing and service of specialized horse care products. Today, Joseph Lyddy is a beloved brand for all horse enthusiasts, ranging from professionals to weekend riders, as well as esteemed figures like Peter Moody Racing, trainer of the champion racehorse Black Caviar. The Joseph Lyddy name and product line remain an integral part of the Australian family-owned company, Waproo Pty Ltd. With a commitment to innovation, new products have been introduced to meet the demands of the modern market, including Farriers’ Choice, Shine Hair Tonic, Crib Stop, a range of shampoos and conditioners, and the esteemed Black Caviar grooming products.
Throughout its proud history, Joseph Lyddy has demonstrated perseverance, achieving remarkable heights in the realm of equestrian care. You can purchase Joseph Lyddy products through a variety of stockists. You can find this information on the navigation bar.
